Is gymnastics judging a joke?

Question by Darren: Is gymnastics judging a joke?
I dont see how gymnastics can be a sport if the judging is so bad. It’s all imaginative by judges who can basically do whatever they want and make whoever they want win.

When I watch gymnastics, it doesnt ever seem to be very competitive. The higher ranked schools always seem to win in NCAA gymnastics.
I was watching one a few weeks ago and this high ranked team had 2 or 3 gymnasts fall bad (like completly hit the ground) but their scores didnt count for some reason (Scores got dropped I guess). But the other school had no one fall but still lost because of “difficulty.” So in other words, there is no possible way for a lower ranked team to win. It’s fixed.

I dont mean to insult anyone…but it’s stupid.

In NCAA football last year….you had like a 120th ranked team (Stanford) beat a top 10 team (USC). Do you ever see upsets like that in gymnastics? Nope.

Well I did competiive gymnastics for several years and I hear what you are saying. The “code of points” has a lot of crap in it. It has been overhauled countless times.

And yes in NCAA gymnastics, the lowest score on each event is dropped. Which I disagree with. I think the NCAA should get rid of that rule. Everyone’s score should count. Because if you are a highly ranked team and 3 of your gymnasts fall and none on the other team did….you need to lose regardless of difficulty. You dont deserve that ranking.

it is a sport. but the judges dont really do that.. the skills in the beam routine performed by the better school who fell may have been harder.(having a higher start value) than the other schools routines. gymnastics meets are not like the movie stick it.. it isnt fixed the judges are trained to see mistakes that is harder to see.. most people who never did gymnastics arent able to point out a bent knee or flexed foot as well as judges and people that have..

no…if you do harder junk you take higher risks and get higher start values so when you fall it isnt as big of a deal…and its super competitive we just keep our cool…and the judges follow the rules and judge what they see…the gymnast puts in the effort and the judges make it into a score

try being a judge first. I was explained everything about gymnastics, how they judge and it makes sense. they judge by performance.

well… I can tell you that sometimes the judges are unfair, think about losing the state competition because the vault you have done all year was scored .5 lower, but besides that. There are a lot of bonus moves that people who are not gymnasts/judges/parents of gymnasts do not know about. A lot of routines actually start out above a 10.0 so if they fall it is not a big deal. Some girls/schools do not have the same bonus skills and have to hit there routine to keep their start value at a 10.0. So no, it is not fixed, each gymnast/team can work on the skills to get the bonuses to compete with the other team.

Gymnastics is a very political sport, and youre right, it doesnt have a clear cut winner like track, for example. A lot fo times we dont see what the judges are thinking, a lot fo times the judges arent thinking, period.
This reminded me of the 1992 Olympics gymnastics AA competition. The big competition at the end was between Tatiana Gutsu fo the Ukriane (Unified team at that point), Shannon Miller fo the US, and Sevetlana Boguinskaya. As much as I adore Boguinskaya, I think ti would have been debatable between those two, they all finished on vault. Boguinskaya was the reigning Olympic champion, vaulted beautifully. Shannon Miller was in 1st, same vaultm very very very good. Moved her into first. Gutsu botched up two landings, bad form, split legs, won the meet. Boguinskaya soemhow plummeted to 5th.
I really do believe the judges decided they would award it to a Soviet gymnast evcause it was their last games as the dynasty.
I could givce you a million examples, it really can make a mockery of the sport.

With the new code fo points, no scores star above ten, thats ludicrous. Start values rarely even make 10 anymore.

I am a current gymnast. I see what you are saying and yes i do take it a bit offensive. I mean i don’t think it is fair that in the NCAA they drop the highest scores for each event but i KNOW that judging isnt picking favorites. It’s about taking all of the little mistakes that other people wont see and deducting them from their starting score. Now when people like Shawn Johnson and Nastia Luikin compete they have a new scoring system. I dont really think that that system is fair but I dont really understand how it works.
