Question by : How adversely will early class withdrawals effect my chances for PhD admissions?
I am a math major at a small state school near my home town which has unusually strong course offerings (e.g. algebraic topology and model theory), and I have done well in my upper-level math coursework thus far. I intend to apply to PhD programs in mathematics (at CUNY, Notre Dame, Dartmouth, Brandeis, Rutgers, Florida State, Utah, USC, Minnesota, Michigan State, Indiana, and Michigan, perhaps among others). However, early in my academic career (sophomore year) I underwent some changes in my personal situation (moved from home, became financially independent, etc.) which caused my to temporarily lose focus on my academics. I am a very strong student, but during that period I withdrew from a number of courses (six total) and had to retake them later. My withdrawals are all under the heading of “WF” on my transcript (institutional policy; I wouldn’t have dropped the courses if I had been passing them), but when I retook the courses I mostly received A’s (with an A- in linear algebra).

How much might my early mistakes in college (I remained an extra year in order to do well in upper level coursework) hinder my ability to be admitted to decent graduate programs in mathematics? I have been left with the impression, in reviewing graduate admissions, that upper-level coursework is far more important than introductory courses (i.e., in my case, the calculus sequence), and that having done well in the courses the second time around with consistency in those and my other classes might work in my favor.

Any insights?

Best answer:

Answer by Mr. X
Your end result would matter more than anything else so you should not worry if you had to drop courses in one year and had to retake them the next year.

Los Angeles, Calif (PRWEB) August 10, 2011

The USC Center for Body Computing (CBC) has announced that Karten Design, Southern California?s leading product innovation consultancy, is among 17 founding members of the CBC. As a member, Karten Design will support wireless health research and innovation, and help transform new technologies and ideas into viable, user-focused products.

“Health care will soon be radically changed by wireless technology, which has the potential to enhance the patient experience and improve health care outcomes,? said Leslie A. Saxon, M.D., the executive director of the CBC, which was established late last year as an epicenter of wireless health.

Karten Design has partnered with medical device and consumer electronics companies for 27 years to commercialize new technology into products that create positive experiences for people. The emerging field of wireless health represents a convergence of Karten Design?s key disciplines and an area where the company offers a great deal of expertise to the CBC.

?For years we?ve followed the trend of individuals being able to take ownership of their health as care moves from hospital-based reactive treatment to home-based proactive care,? said Karten Design principal Stuart Karten, whose 25-person firm has partnered with companies including Avery Dennison Medical Solutions, Starkey Laboratories, Inc. and Medtronic Diabetes to develop wireless health solutions. ?We believe wireless health will have a profound change on the medical device industry and would like to help drive that change.?

The sponsoring companies, from startups to large corporations, come from all corners of the globe. In supporting the CBC, Karten Design joins a group of 17 international technology, software, device and service leaders, including Medtronic, Inc., St. Jude Medical, Avery Dennison, Boston Scientific, Proteus Biomedical and Sotera Wireless, that are working to advance healthcare delivery and education.

?Our founding members are a critical part of the Center for Body Computing. We are jointly creating product prototypes and economic models for wireless health. We believe wireless medicine has the potential to help millions, if not billions, of people,? said Saxon. ?Wireless health solutions can democratize medicine by breaking down the barriers between health care providers and patients, leading to faster and more cost-effective cures, and increased access to health solutions for people worldwide.?

About the Center for Body Computing

The Center for Body Computing works with other USC schools, including the USC School of Cinematic Arts, the USC Marshall School of Business, and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, to think about, study and create the future of wireless medicine. CBC initiatives include work with the Institute for Communication Technology Management at the USC Marshall School of Business to study how mobile phones can be used in the prevention of illnesses and epidemics; studying the role of social media in health care; medical research (Dr. Saxon recently authored a ground-breaking study which followed more than 100,000 patients across the United States and found increased survival rates among remotely monitored patients with wireless-enabled devices); sports (the National Football League Charities has given a grant to the CBC to study the dynamic heart rate in NFL and USC football players); app development (the CBC works with various medical and non-medical companies, to develop wellness and other wireless health applications for disease prevention and wellness as well as for chronic diseases that require continuous management); and conferences and seminars. The CBC will host the 5th annual USC Body Computing Conference on Sept. 22-23, 2011.

I was bullied severely in middle and high school for being a nerd and for being “ugly” (aka awkward stage). It was in this small podunk town that was in the middle of nowhere in Illinois. I don’t even GET the point of trying to be popular in highschool that’s in a redneck town that no one gives a crap about.

This group of “popular” girls made fun of me constantly and let me tell you, some of those girls were butt ugly. I am NOT jealous of a girl that’s 5 feet tall and 200 pounds with zits. These girls thought that they were from California and they weren’t very bright.

Now, I go accepted into USC and hot guys constantly hit on me and I get told that I’m a hottie and am no longer in my awkward stage. These girls are still living in their small town and don’t go to college and are not going anything with lives.

Being popular gets you NOWHERE.
Smart gets you somewhere.

Question by Darren: Is gymnastics judging a joke?
I dont see how gymnastics can be a sport if the judging is so bad. It’s all imaginative by judges who can basically do whatever they want and make whoever they want win.

When I watch gymnastics, it doesnt ever seem to be very competitive. The higher ranked schools always seem to win in NCAA gymnastics.
I was watching one a few weeks ago and this high ranked team had 2 or 3 gymnasts fall bad (like completly hit the ground) but their scores didnt count for some reason (Scores got dropped I guess). But the other school had no one fall but still lost because of “difficulty.” So in other words, there is no possible way for a lower ranked team to win. It’s fixed.

I dont mean to insult anyone…but it’s stupid.

In NCAA football last year….you had like a 120th ranked team (Stanford) beat a top 10 team (USC). Do you ever see upsets like that in gymnastics? Nope.

Best answer:

Answer by koolgrl611
Well I did competiive gymnastics for several years and I hear what you are saying. The “code of points” has a lot of crap in it. It has been overhauled countless times.

And yes in NCAA gymnastics, the lowest score on each event is dropped. Which I disagree with. I think the NCAA should get rid of that rule. Everyone’s score should count. Because if you are a highly ranked team and 3 of your gymnasts fall and none on the other team did….you need to lose regardless of difficulty. You dont deserve that ranking.

Question by : What kind of jobs can you get with an International Relations degree?
Well I am 14, going to high school, and I’m beginning to think a lot about what I should do in my life. I was always an international person, being raised up in many countries and coming from a very international family. I speak English, Mandarin, and Japanese naturally and studies French and ASL. I knew from when I was young that I wanted to work where I get to explore many more countries and experience things that most people won’t.

One of my school’s alumni studies international relations at USC and by the name of it, it sounded very interesting. I was not aware of it until I heard it from him. And with furthermore research, I found out that the name of the degree explains it all, it is the study of “International Relations.”

But what kind of jobs can I get with this degree?
What can I do to prepare for this?
Also, I am not very fond of being SUPER rich, but I am aware that I need to get a stable job for the future. So, will whatever the job I can get this degree kind of promises stable financial life?

Thanks!
